Chris Cilizza over at Washington Post has 3 excellent charts about how attitudes towards gay marriage have changed:

I too hope that this gets decided in the win column for those of us who are liberal.I really think this is a distraction from what is really important,i.e. income disparity, and the further destruction of the New Deal.If we are really lucky we can dispel with the myth that this country is a "center right" land.It would really be lovely to end the stranglehold of corporate greed over this really great land of ours.

Your column was spot on on this yesterday, the smartest Republicans will be hoping that the Supreme Court effectively legalises gay marriage.

Hawk Owl -

The best commentary I've ever heard on the issue came from the TV show "West Wing." I quote the full scene in:

http://www.chrisweigant.com/2010/05/31/memorializing-second-class-soldiers/

Beat that with a stick.

"The Media" so often fills up web space or spills ink on a current issue by relying on tossing metaphors back & forth that it's refreshing to encounter some actual thinking. I'm thinking particularly of your comparison of how the Military (by analogy with their response once racial integration laws were in place) may become an important, active and effective "change agent" on this issue. I was a civilian employee for a couple of decades and know they could well do so. They have been trained to set aside personal, emotional attitudes in pursuit of a goal. They did so before
(witness Colin Powell's rise to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) and they just might do so again.
