The petition is now at 26,000+, meaning the WH has to answer it. Their marker is "25K in 30 days" so maybe they'll answer it in 30 days. I don't want to see action from the WH at this point, I just want to hear a clear statement of policy.

The laws in WA and CO won't go into effect for about a month (something about verifying the votes), and in CO may take a lot longer -- up to a year to write new regs. Basically, I'd like to see the WH come up with a stance in by mid-Dec.

Actually, I didn't submit this one to HP because it was Tuesday. I thought about it, since I didn't post on Monday, but decided not to. So the blame lies with me, not them. Just to clear that up.

Watching Ken Burns' "Prohibition" I learned two things. (1) there were "medicinal" loopholes for alcohol all during Prohibition. If you were wealthy enough to pay for doctor's visits, you just got a prescription each month for your booze, and you could buy it legally. Obvious parallels to today. (2) Prohibition ended because the states themselves began overturning the laws. State after state "just said no" to prohibition in their own laws, until finally federal action happened. Again, parallels to today.

Convenient "look the other way" policies while the issue remains illegal under Fed. law is all fine for one or two states, and for the time the guy that agrees to look the other way has authority.

In alcohol prohibition, there was an Amendment going in, so the sunset was the counter-Amendment going out. Nothing like that here. Federal law needs to be amended, even while there is are valid, federal, interstate and international, reasons for federal narcotics laws overall to remain in force.

Specifically, we request the president to support a pending congressional proposal that would amend the federal pre-emption section of the Controlled Substances Act (section 903) to exempt from the act any state provisions "relating to marijuana."

About as pure a statement of pragmatic Federalism as one could want. (Pure Constitutional federalism might say the Federal gov't has no business in having a Controlled Substances Act in the first place).

RE: "colorado, indiana and idaho of all places" in voting down for-profit education. Not too surprising, really. Rural Americans, particularly those in agriculture, may vote Republican, but they deeply distrust FatCats and carpetbagging Elites. Just as in the South, where people still talk about "the War" as if it had effected them directly, farmers and ranchers still talk about "the Depression." In either case, the intensity comes from the oral tradition which relates the events and lessons of the greatest disaster they ever faced, which many still learn as thoroughly as they learn their Catechism.
