I think this year they seemed more pointless than years gone by because the amount of money involved in the election is much greater than ever before - so because of this the candidates have had considerable media exposure already. But they still served a purpose in introducing Ryan to the media/public (didn't go so well) as well as Ann Romney. In addition to this lesser figures in the party try to make a name for themselves in front of a national audience (particularly those looking to run in 2016). Wasn't it the DNC 2004 where Mr Obama himself made his name? CW
