David -

Most interesting response I got yet was (I think) over at HuffPost, who suggested the gov. of NM -- a woman Hispanic Republican.

Makes a certain degree of sense...

I'm thinking Romney will go for someone who will campaign for him among some crucial block of turnout voters.

I think that's a good bet, dsws. I think Romney will pick a Hispanic or a woman and if I had to guess, I'd say a woman.

Coincidentally, this will also hurt his standing with the traditional conservative base (heheh ... that's a joke, son)

One role traditionally assigned to the running mate is attack. But super-PACs can handle that. I'm thinking Romney will go for someone who will campaign for him among some crucial block of turnout voters.

UPDATE

Editorial update: a reader was kind enough to contact me via email, and pointed out several errors in the MDDOTW section, where I (repeatedly... blush...) said "voted against" the bill when I meant "voted for" the bill. These errors have now been corrected.

Mea culpa, all...

Yes. I said no explosion, with some nothing-event on New Year's being the closest thing there was to an explosion. So I was way off on the date, insofar as there's a specific date on which something didn't happen, but correct about the non-explosion.

dsws -

I thought you picked New Year's Day??

Heh.

Scott Brown might not be as wacky a pick as you think. Unfortunately, I think the Constitution doesn't allow it, unless one of them "pulls a Cheney" and quickly re-registers in another state (easy for Mitt to do, with his multiple houses, now that I think about it).

Brown's veephood would hand his Senate seat to Warren, but if the polls already show that would have happened anyway, I could see it happening.

Stranger things have indeed happened...

We have to report, sadly, that Newt Gingrich exits the race this week with more of a whimper (desperately seeking Delaware?) than any sort of bang.

Shouldn't that give some sort of runner-up status to those of us who said there wouldn't be any explosion?

We're going to open the contest with our own wacky guess ... Scott Walker

I'll open the comments with a wacky "guess": Scott Brown. I'll follow with a real guess when/if I think of one.
