services exchanged through a medium of currency, but nothing produced

The groceries and booze weren't produced at the cash register, but they're definitely goods rather than services. The services of storing and distributing the groceries, and serving the booze and providing a place to hang out and drink it, are services rather than goods. But services are produced.

Furthermore, if there's to be a ranking of goods vs services, services belong on top. The whole point of goods is that they provide services. You don't get a refrigerator as an altruistic act toward refrigeratordom. You get a refrigerator because it provides the service of keeping your food from spoiling. If it took less labor and resources to keep people's food from spoiling by doing something (without the involvement of a large kitchen appliance or any other goods) than it does to manufacture, transport, and install a refrigerator, that would be an improvement for all concerned. By contrast if someone makes a refrigerator that fails to provide its service, that's a complete waste.

But what has actually been accomplished?

The clerk has embezzled $100 from the hotel: initially the c-note was held as deposit by the hotel, not the clerk, and at the end the other hotel guest paid it to the hotel, not the clerk. But the clerk used it to pay his debt, not the hotel's.

If we replace the hotel clerk with a hotel owner who had the right to do so, then all that happened was that a bunch of debts totaling zero were canceled out. Risk of default was removed from the system.

Any financial asset always totals to zero, not just debt. (Aside from transaction costs, that is.) The amount of dividends that will eventually be paid on a share of stock is the same as the amount of dividends that will be received on that share of stock. But the uncertainty will be valued differently by different people. A good financial transaction creates little or no new risk, and transfers existing risk to those most willing to bear it.

I would disagree..

I think the norm is actually producing a quality product or something tangible that benefits society..

Of course, there will ALWAYS be people who want to live off the labor of others.. They are called politicians :D

Call me idealistic, but I honestly believe that the normal American is hard working and only wants to make a decent living to provide for their families...

Of course, if ya hit me up during a cynical funk, I would likely say just the opposite. :D

Everyone is happy, seemingly satisfied...

But what has actually been accomplished???

services exchanged through a medium of currency, but nothing produced. one could say that about almost anyone's life really. most people in modern society don't really contribute much to the world.

Interesting economic theory I came across on another forum...

A man walks into a hotel, asks to view a room to see if it meets his needs, a $100 deposit is required.

The man lays a $100 bill on the counter and heads up stairs to view the room.

As he leaves the clerk grabs the bill and heads next door to pay his tab at the saloon.

As he walk's out the door the bartender grabs the $100 bill and heads over to pay the grocer for last weeks dry goods.

The grocer with his $100 paid runs across the street to pay the whore for his previous night's tryst...

She then takes the bill and pays for her room at the hotels front desk.

At that exact moment the man comes downstairs declines the room takes his $100 bill back and leaves.

Everyone is happy, seemingly satisfied...

But what has actually been accomplished???

Well, good to see the comments are indeed working (sort of).

The fault is truly mine, as I've been the one most absent from these threads. This is because the end of the tunnel is in sight in my other writing project, and although I have many hours of work left, I can at least see the end of the road at this point. I may be taking off Tuesdays and Thursdays more often in the next few weeks, as I make the final push for the goal line.

So, to put it another way, I shouldn't be complaining, as I have no one to blame but myself.

Those are "scandals"?

Oh, I see what you are saying.. I slipped an inadvertent period in there...

That SHOULD read:

I mean, look at all the scandals, the bad polls, donors slamming doors, lousy fund-raising, more scandals, economy in the toilet, having to sell dates with George Clooney, selling a handshake with Obama for $1000(Shades Of Newt)...

My bust.. :D

Liz,

It can have a very deleterious effect on comment activity.

Well, considering what ya'all have to work with, I can see where defending the Obama Administration would not be a job for the faint of heart.... :D

I mean, look at all the scandals. The bad polls, donors slamming doors, lousy fund-raising, more scandals, economy in the toilet, having to sell dates with George Clooney, selling a handshake with Obama for $1000(Shades Of Newt)...

About the only GOOD thing going for Obama in the coming re-election is that Romney ain't much better... :D

Kevin,

Almost any other comment will result in a flood of the same old "arguments" from he-who-must-not-be-named.

Hehehehehehe That made me laugh..

CW,

i for one am still recovering from a week of mind-numbing standardized testing, which technically won't be over until tuesday or wednesday. also this month, all my health care and prescription co-pays doubled, and i'm wondering why someone from my union wasn't shouting about it, or even mildly complaining at least. i'm sure if medical marijuana were legal, the co-pay on that would double too.

nonetheless, great point about the WORK act, someone does need to be shouting that from the rooftops, not to mention bringing back the voting records of the congressmen who voted against mothers' day.

There are only so many times one can say "nice piece" without being boorishly redundant :) Almost any other comment will result in a flood of the same old "arguments" from he-who-must-not-be-named. There was a gem of outrageousness from a few days back that I've been stifling the urge to whack, but I've seen the same dreary spate of BS too many times to risk mentioning it.
