The culture wars aren't just about sex. They're about gender.

It's not about sex OR gender..

It's about power..

The Left wants it. The Right wants it..

But Virginia wasn't done -- they also passed a bill saying life begins at conception. What's next? Life begins at Last Call? Life begins when you click Send on your Match.com profile? I mean, really.

Stole my line! :D

They'll adapt, re-frame, and re-position. If they are on the losing end of culture-war issues in a few years, and I don't take it for granted that they will be, any losses they suffer from it will be minimal.

Author Jeff Sharlet has written about the decision by evangelicals to move away from gay marriage and towards Islamophobia. Groups like NOM have been fighting a rear-guard action on the issue while a new religious McCarthyism has been growing.

So what we're seeing in the birth control culture wars is another "lost cause" like gay marriage, and it has an interesting history in the pro-life movement. Conservative Catholicism is largely responsible for galvanizing evangelicalism against abortion, and Catholic groups have managed to ensure that not one -- NOT ONE! -- of the major pro-life groups in America supports birth control access.

Lost causes do not really ever die. They ennoble the latter-day adherent and inspire the fight. We will be old and gray and these culture wars will still be raging. That is the point: the important thing is not that the culture wars be won, but that they continue.
