King was denouncing the entire <em>concept</em> of the "drum major instinct" but you just wouldn't have known that from the media reports. Seriously, everyone, go read the first dozen and the last dozen paragraphs from that speech. It will give you an appreciation for why Angelou was so seriously annoyed.
