<I>OK, how do you define "We'll still be in Iraq"? Troops, or just the embassy and contractors?</I>

My guess is, to save face, Obama will call it simply an enhanced embassy security force..

But I estimate will will have at least 2-5 thousand troops in Iraq past the 31 Dec 2011 deadline..

Osborne -

And Republicans can't even say he's doing it for "politics" since Bush was the one who set the timetable! Heh.

David -

I expect the news media to pick up on it right around Xmas -- with the full-on "home for Christmas" storyline. That's my guess, anyway.

dsws -

OK, but good news from Iraq is good news from Iraq, right?

Bringing home a trickle of troops from Afghanistan, after having sent a massive surge, still leaves far more than were there. There's no end in sight.

Peace in Afghanistan starts in Beijing and New Delhi. They have interests there, that Moscow and Islamabad can count on them to stay committed to. We don't. Without such interests, we have no credibility beyond the next election. Without long-term credibility, we have little ability to influence events on the ground beyond the actions of our own troops.

We're on track to spend another couple trillion dollars in Afghanistan over the next ten years, and accomplish nothing. We could accomplish far more by cutting out five hundred billion of military spending and making one hundred hundred billion dollars' worth of concessions to the other countries in the region as part of a deal that would also help stabilize Pakistan.

<I>Not only will the US be out of Iraq on January 1, 2012, but the president will be announcing further troop reductions in Afghanistan. By this time next year, Obama will be the man "bringing them home."</I>

Yea and Gitmo will be closed the first year of the Obama Presidency, all of Bush's tax cuts will be rescinded, all of Bush's CT policies will be rescinded and those who followed them prosecuted... and.. Oh yea.. Passing the stimulus will keep unemployment below 8%.....

Remove the Obama-Love blinders and face reality..

We'll still be in Iraq and Afghanistan when Obama leaves office in Jan of 2013..

That's a guarantee....
