I'll be brief because I'm only adding another example (tangential to your thoughtful theme) but the paucity of historical teaching about "unpleasant" aspects in US History has been flagrant by its absence in another big-time news story.
The "Wall Street Occupiers" directly echo another old tradition ~ in the 1930's Washington was "invaded" by "Cox's Army" (many 1,000's of unemployed war [WWI] veterans) amid a major depression/unemployment crisis, and they were only repeating "Coxey's Army" during the Panic (Depression)of 1893, also consisting of many 1,000's of unemployed veterans (Civil War.) The "Occupiers" are in the direct line of an old American tradition and a "surprise" only to the historically ignorant.
