Michale,

Douglas Adams is spinning in his grave.

Are you shooting for some kind of record for wrong-headedness, or is it simply that you cannot help yourself?

<I>The Populists did have an ugly side, to be historically accurate. They were fiercely anti-immigrant, for example -- for the same reasons bandied about today ("They're taking our jobs!"). And the disgraceful leap from hating "Eastern bankers" to outright anti-Semitism was one which more than a few Populists made, as well. So while Populists did advance the progress of American democracy in many important ways, they were far from flawless when viewed through the lens of today's ethical and moral standards.</I>

Wouldn't such flaws preclude us, in the here and now, from referring to Democrats as "populist"??

I mean, if the Tea Party is disqualified from being "populist" because it violates a tenet or two of the "real" populist movement then it stands to reason that the Democratic Party must ALSO be disqualified from the "populist" label because IT violates a tenet or two of the "real" populist movement...

On the other hand, a logical argument can be made that the Democratic Party is "populist" because it is against "big business" and Wall Street...

But, following that logic, it can ALSO be accurate to say that the Tea Party is ALSO "populist" because it is against illegal immigration and for smaller government...

You see how tricky it gets when one get's ensnared in political Party dogma, ideology and labels?? If one is of the persuasion, one can find links between the best and the worst that history has to offer and see such links in their chosen dogma and against their sworn "enemy"??

<B>"I did all the things in the bible! Even the things that contradicted all the other things!"</B>
-Ned Flanders

It seems to me that, more and more, Democrats and Republicans are arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin...

It reminds me of the old Trek episode, LET THAT BE YOUR LAST BATTLEFIELD.

Two aliens. From the same race. Sworn-To-The-Death enemies..

Why?? Because one was black on the LEFT and white on the RIGHT and the other was white on the LEFT and black on the RIGHT...

Yet they were of the same race..

I feel that way a lot when I see Democrats and Republicans going at it..

It all seems so pointless..

We're all Americans, fer chreest's sake!

Anyways, that's my political soliloquy for the night...

G'night and thanx for all the fish. :D
