In Madison in June, at the Vilas Park Zoo, it was too hot for the polar bears to be out, but I spotted a number of tee shirts proclaiming the need, if not the fact yet, of Feingold standing for recall of the Governor, which cannot occur until next year in any case. Tomorrow stands between now and then; tomorrow is important.

Beyond Robert LaFollette (one of my political heros), I've always admired Wisconsin politics and Wisconsin common sense: Democratic, fiscally conservative, socially liberal Senators like William Proxmire; solidly conservative, upwardly mobile "Rotary Club" Republicans in and from the suburbs of Milwaukee; rural agri-businessmen (some call 'em farmers) who understood for bottom-line reasons that Farm Co-Op memberships had far more value and benefits than labels of "socialist" could take away.

I understood how the rural base could vanish, but could never understand how the sensible conservatives could give way to what happened there. Actually, of course, we can identify the machinery that enabled it to happen; I mean how it was allowed to happen.

Tomorrow is important. I still have faith in the instincts and heritage of the people of the state. I hope the relatively few who can, do vote that tradition.

Tomorrow is important. I still have faith in the instincts and heritage of the people of the state. I hope the relatively few who can, do vote that tradition.
