But let's advance it to the next logical step.. A group of conservatives in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida decide to take liberals up on their offer to "become their own country" and take all their industry and assets with them..

"I'm not sure, but I think I just declared war on Wyoming!"

That's really good, David! I like it. :D

But there are a couple points that just doesn't take into account liberal nature..

You can own as many guns as you want on your property.

You and I both know that Liberals want complete and utter gun control. Extended to the privacy of one's home...

Through the miracle of modern technology, all we have to do is issue a citizen card to everyone who wants to pay taxes and share our public resources, and a non-citizen card to everyone who doesn’t.

This really isn't a "liberal" point, but it brings up an issue that I have been simmering over.

Do you recall that story a few weeks back about how it was learned that some Pulitzer prize winning journalist turned out to be an illegal immigrant??

Of course, the pro-illegal-immigrant folks pointed to that as proof of how we should amnesty all illegals.

But my question in all of that was simple..

Did that illegal pay any taxes??

I would be willing to wager he didn't..

And THAT is the biggest problem with illegals in this country. They take and take and take and give nothing back...

Anyways, that blurb in your commentary reminded me of that. Sorry to go off tangent..

Anyways, overall your idea does have merit..

But let's advance it to the next logical step.. A group of conservatives in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida decide to take liberals up on their offer to "become their own country" and take all their industry and assets with them..

Liberals might actually prefer this. Living like the Amish... :D

Such a move is a double-edged sword.... :D

You give them incentives to keep the jobs here in the US.

Ok, that might be one option. No conservatives are talking about this though. That's what I like about you, Michale, you don't just spout the same conservative party line.

Maybe getting all those millionaire and billionaire Democrats to lead by example and have them give all their millions and billions to the IRS.

I'll go you one better, Michale. I think we liberals should offer to buy the government from anyone who doesn't want to participate.

What's to stop them if you give them more tax breaks?

Simple...

You give them incentives to keep the jobs here in the US...

Obviously taxing them to hell and back and threatening to tax them more is not going to work...

Time to try something different....

Maybe getting all those millionaire and billionaire Democrats to lead by example and have them give all their millions and billions to the IRS..

It does have the benefit of not having been tried, eh?? :D

I am certain that, once those GOP millionaires and billionaires sees "real" leadership in action, they will follow suit... :D

If you tax all the greedy corporations, what's to stop them from sending more, if not ALL, their jobs overseas?

David,

As I see it, you want to give the small business owners a break, but tax the large corporations who send their jobs overseas..

That's all well and good and I do see the logic of such a position..

But, let me ask you this..

If you tax all the greedy corporations, what's to stop them from sending more, if not ALL, their jobs overseas???

Seems to me that we need to give incentives to ALL businesses, large and small, to keep jobs here in the US....

Do we REALLY want to piss off the top 2% of this country that pays over 80% of the taxes in this country??

If Democrats are serious about making the rich pay even MORE in taxes, why don't they lead by example??

Last I checked, the IRS still accepts donations... :D

A big shoutout also this week to Kathy Hochul.

I'd like to commend her for this quote:

The small businesses are the ones we have to protect, and they don't think it's fair they pay more in taxes than the largest corporations who ship jobs overseas.

Why?

Currently our economic policy is dictated by the largest corporations while the smaller ones are the ones who create the most jobs in the U.S.

What Kathy is talking about is better target marketing. Serve the most appropriate market- small business owners. If Democrats could target small businesses and convince them that the playing field needs to be leveled, they would bring in a key constituency that is currently not being served very well by either party.

The recession officially ended in 2009.

Yea, and last summer was the "recovery summer"...

I don't put much stock in what the "officials" say.. Especially since it was those same "officials" who caused the problem in the first place.

I think Obama has a pretty good idea of what to do with the economy

Based on what??

The recession officially ended in 2009. You were implying that he was being a hypocrite for wanting to raise taxes to deal with the deficit.

Raising taxes now may or may not be a good thing but it is an entirely different argument than raising them in the middle of recession...

I think Obama has a pretty good idea of what to do with the economy. It just is different than the Republicans Idea. But then this is an issue you have ignored since Obama has come in to office...

Bashi,

Ya know, I love it when someone questions my facts. :D

It shows that, when there is no response, obviously the facts are all agreed upon... :D

"So he’s absolutely right, the last thing you want to do is raise taxes in the middle of a recession....."
-Barack Obama

You are correct.. It wasn't "coming out" of a recession, but rather in the middle of a recession...

May I ask why that makes any difference to the substance of my claim that Obama's past statements are completely opposite and inconsistent with his current statements and actions..

It seems to me you are picking at nits to avoid the painful truth..

That Obama is simply in way over his head and hasn't clue one what to do about the economy...

:D

Misquoting again? I can see why you did not post links.

I believe Obama said he agreed that raising taxes during/in the middle of a recession is bad. He said nothing about coming out of a recession...

A couple years ago, Obama said that the absolute worst thing you can do when coming out of a recession is to raise taxes...

I have to say, Obama's ass must be pretty sore, what with all these past statements coming back to bite him on it.... :^/

The Republicans would simply laugh at Obama if he tried that. He has no leverage. Throwing the question to the Supreme Court (where their party holds a majority) would cause financial turmoil, economic devastation, and the immediate fall of the US to non-great-power status. They are absolutely willing to do that, over one single cent of top-bracket taxation. They're almost ready to do it just for the thrill of it, even if he caves on every demand they can think of. Meanwhile he's worrying about how he'll be viewed by historians, which they think is absolutely hilarious as they kick the country just to watch him wince.

I have an alternate theory.

Republicans are sincerely concerned about the orgasm of spending by Democrats and they think it it bad for the country.

Republicans recognize the sound advice of one very basic economic tenet..

When in a financial hole, the FIRST thing you do is STOP DIGGING..

Only in the halls of the Democratic Party does one actually believe one can SPEND their way out of bankruptcy..

Don't get me wrong.. There ARE ways that a country can use financial power (IE spend) to drag itself up from a depression or a recession... History is replete with such examples..

But this orgasmic spending that we have seen in the last 3 years, this throwing money at anything and everything and just printing more and more to throw at more and more....

Well, even an economic ignoramus such as myself can see how completely and utterly moronic such actions are...

And look where it has taken the country...

Once you get past the blatant partisanship, it's an interesting read...

Cut Social Security. Cut Medicare. Cut Medicaid. Cut the military. Raise taxes.

It's unreasonable to expect that we should pay the same amount for the same number of years for retirement of ever-increasing length at an ever-increasing standard of living. It's unreasonable to expect that every medical procedure everyone can think of to try should be paid, without regard for the fact that it's crowding out spending on everything else except the military. It's flat-out insane to spend trillions of dollars on wars that no one even has any idea why we're fighting. It's beyond insane to insist that no one who can afford to pay taxes should ever have to do so in any amount no matter how small.

The James Webb Space Telescope is being scrapped, after all the expensive parts have been done successfully. The initial cost estimates were horribly low-balled, and the costs went slightly over what a reasonable estimate would have been. But the job got done, and done well. Basically all we would have to do is launch the thing and get the data. It would cost something like one ten-thousandth of the amounts in play on any one of the big-ticket items. But it's "non-military discretionary spending", so we have to cut it. Because we as a country are bat-shit stupid.

But the Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week this week goes to Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota, who is strongly fighting his own struggle with Republicans, over his state's budget. Dayton wants to slightly raise taxes on a handful of millionaires in the state. The Republicans in charge of the legislature do not want this (no surprise there). As a result, the state now has no budget and is in the midst of a state government shutdown.

Governor Dayton would be a LOT more impressive if he hadn't retained his personal chef and housekeeper during the shutdown.

I guess it's not only Republicans who are protecting millionaire's perks. :D

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."

So, if I understand you correctly, President Obama would use his self-created "Libya Option"...

Meaning he would say, "Yea, I know we have negotiated and negotiated and negotiated til hell hath froze over. But, ya know what?? I just came to the conclusion that all the rules and procedures of the past really don't apply to me."....

Screw the Republicans, the American people would have a conniption fit...

The scary part is, I can actually see President Obama doing this....
