CW,

I like the idea of requiring television stations to provide political ads for free. EVERY candidate (not just Dem/GOP) gets the same amount of time to make their case to the public. Bet that would change the dynamic of campaigning.

Also, as NYPoet pointed out, not only would the candidates and the Political Partys fight such a move, but so would the TV stations, as that is a huge cash cow for them...

(what is going on, I've agreed with you twice in this thread now!?!).

Don't worry about it. Ya made up for it by reading me the Riot Act in the NO FLY ZONE commentary.. :D

@cw,

they say to solve a problem, first you have to name it. my suggestion was "cap scam" but really it could be anything that adequately sums up the problem.

y'know, it's been a long time since you held a contest... just sayin'

nypoet22 [1] -

Yeah, if only Harry Reid had followed her lead...

Michale [2,4] -

OK, well, I gotta give you that one. Sigh.

nypoet [3] -

I've been beating this drum for a while now. If the SS cap had kept pace with inflation, it would stand at 180K now, instead of 106K. Get rid of altogether, and you solve the entire SS "crisis" in one fell swoop. Which is why it never even gets brought up for discussion on cable news... sigh.

Agreed. So somehow we'd have to change the nature of the game. Right now, it takes serious money to win an election.

You bet. Obama's shooting for a billion.

I like the idea of setting a dollar amount that politicians can use in a campaign and make it all government funded.... Eliminate ALL private political contributions.

Period.

Amen! Think of all the horrible commercials this would save us from every couple of years :)

that's another great idea that will never happen, because media companies don't want to give up the multi-million dollar windfall they get every two years.

I am simply saying that politicians won't make sincere efforts to go after the rich because they know they would be cutting off a major source of donations.

Agreed. So somehow we'd have to change the nature of the game. Right now, it takes serious money to win an election.

So either we have to start voting better :), or we have to cut folks off from the lobbying dollars. Or both!

There's something I'd like to hear either party talking about.

Yer preaching to the choir here.. I am in complete agreement with you...

Doesn't matter if it's a Democrat or a Republican.

keeping lower taxes on the bottom 90% shouldn't offend rich people should it? it's not actually raising their taxes, just putting off that discussion, since everyone seems to agree about taxes on the poor and middle class.

my real pipe dream would be to remove the "caps" that mean the richer you are, the lower percentage you pay. a $100,000 cap on a 6% social security tax means:

if you make under 1.6 million you pay 6%
if you make 2 million you pay 5%
if you make over 10 million you pay less than 1%

this isn't a "cap," it's a scam. social security is a regressive tax that puts all the burden on the poor and middle class, to say nothing of "capital gains."

The problem Democrats face is that they are beholden to the same millionaires and billionaires that the Republicans are beholden to...

Democrats aren't really willing to bite the hands that bribe them...

on the tax cuts issue, i thought nancy pelosi had the right idea this past fall. write a bill to make permanent the tax cuts for the bottom 90-95% of the population, and dare the republicans to reject it.
