And one recent Newsweek poll had him at 54%...

Which illustrates perfectly what I have always said about polls. :D

But at least you are fair about it.. You usually bring out the Poll of the Polls.. :D

Michale -

One other thing, I think it was conservative commentator David Brooks who pointed this out -- the thing about it being unique that the Republican job approval was at all-time lows right before they were about to have a wave election. Just to give credit for the idea where it is due.

As to your other point, you were right, the paragraph needed a link (and needed to be a lot clearer as to what I was talking about). Commenters over at HuffPost had similar questions. So I dug up a link:

http://www.pollingreport.com/cong_rep.htm

This is for Republicans, click on the tabs at the top to see Dems and Congress as a whole.

Like I said, I should have provided this in the article, and didn't do so out of sheer laziness. So mea culpa for that.

Look for polls that measure "job approval" or just "approval" of the Republican Party as a whole -- not voter intent (which is a different thing). Obama's job approval we all know (mid/high 40s). Democratic Party approval is mid-30s. Republican Party approval is mid-20s. Congress is at 20 or even below.

Of course, there are other ways that Democrats might win elections... :D

Sam Laughinghouse of New Bern said he pushed the button to vote Republican in all races, but the voting machine screen displayed a ballot with all Democrats checked. He cleared the screen and tried again with the same result, he said. Then he asked for and received help from election staff.

“They pushed it twice and the same thing happened,” Laughinghouse said. “That was four times in a row. The fifth time they pushed it and the Republicans came up and I voted.”

newbernsj.com/articles/machine-91656-screen-voter.html

Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.

Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

"Something's not right," Ferrara said. "One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong."
fox5vegas.com/news/25511115/detail.html

Looks like Dems have carried the CrapCare motto, "By Hook Or By Crook" over to their elections.. :D

Republicans, by taking the House, are going to be forced into "having a dog in the fight" instead of being able to merely criticize from the sidelines as the "Party of 'No'," because they're going to be the ones to produce legislation and budgets, instead of having the luxury of just opposing everything the other party comes up with.

And I am constrained to point out again. Republicans have never had a problem with this, when they were the majority Party.

I think Democrats are putting too much faith in the hope that the Republicans will frak things up worse... Democrats seem to think, "Well, WE couldn't to diddley squat. It's damn sure that the Republicans won't be able to either!!!"

Democrats might want to prepare themselves for a very rude awakening..

On the other hand, the American public is so fed up with their government to begin with, it's also possible that the Republicans will fail to please the American people either...

Time will tell...

Republicans, in general, tend to overestimate their "voter mandate" when they win at the polls. Democrats, in contrast, tend to underestimate their mandate, but that's a whole different subject.

I would have to say that this didn't hold true in the current Dem Congress. It's apparent that the Democratic Party totally screwed the pooch (not to mention the American people) by assuming they had a blank check...

But the Republican Party's approval rating is the most dismal of all (unless you count Congress as a whole, which is truly scraping the bottom of the approval barrel), clocking in lower than even the Democratic Party's approval.

I would have to ask your source for this.

Because all the polls that I have seen that ask people who would they vote for in a generic Democrat vs a generic Republican, the majority would vote for the Republican..
