The main reason that the White House isn't touting Iraq like it could is because the inevitable response would be that it was Bush's surge (the Surge that ALL Democrats (even Biden) were against) that made it possible for Obama to somewhat keep his promise.

This Administration would rather blame Bush for all the ills, rather than actually give him credit for anything, Biden's admission notwithstanding..

I can hear you now, Chris! :)

I stopped yelling at the teevee at about the same time I stopped watching those network and cable news broadcasts. I finally had my fill, and then some. I don't stray very far away from the enlightened corners of HP anymore, either ... well, I'm making progress, at least.

Even Christiane Amanpour, in her debut on This Week, demonstrated a fundamental lack of understanding of the significance of the July 2011 transition in Afghanistan. If she can't get that right then what hope is there for the rest of the media ... and, John McCain!? I guess that will have to be one of your next missions!

Liz -

I think Obama was just saving it up for August, personally, even though I was urging them to start talking about it earlier myself.

I saw the evening news after posting this. One network (CBS, or possibly NBC) reported there were 81,000 troops still in Iraq. "Morons!" I yelled at the teevee, "check with the Pentagon!"

Sheesh...

Chris,

This is an excellent presentation of the timeline for withdrawing troops from Iraq and how it came about. I'm going to go out on a limb here - way out - and say that the media will not be reporting on any of this, in or out of context.

What I don't understand is why Obama/Biden have let the media get away with their nonsense reporting - on this issue and all others - and not become more adept at getting their message out about some very important accomplishments. I am completely confounded by this administration’s failure to communicate - this was the last thing I thought we would have to worry about with this crew!

Speaking of Biden, let's not forget to acknowledge President Obama for putting his vice president in charge of the Iraq file. Obama understands, as few others do, the ongoing role being played by Vice President Biden who is responsible, in large part, for preventing another slide into sectarian strife in Iraq. While that outcome still remains a possibility, we are fortunate to have the vice president overseeing the Iraq file, doing everything he can to make sure that slide doesn't happen as the troop withdrawal proceeds and that the Iraqis make more progress toward political reconciliation.

And, as for the sacred obligation of supporting the troops ... well, Biden's fingerprints were all over that part of the speech. Just to be clear ... :)
