A good article showing how Republicans struggle w/ spinning this issue:

http://www.salon.com/news/politics/2010_elections/index.html?story=/opinion/conason/2010/08/05/ethics

Dems have reformed the Ethics committee to the point where it is actually functioning. And Republicans want to do what?

Return it to the hands of John Boehner? The guy who passed out checks from Brown and Williamson to Republicans on the house floor?

Where's the "liberal" media to cover the Dem reform story?

(Oh yeah. I forgot. They're busy covering the latest made up Republican controversy.)

Cheers

CB,

Sadly enough, that is exactly what CrapCare is...

Pelosi said that they have to pass CrapCare before anyone will know what's in it...

Well, it's passed and people STILL don't know what's in it. But Americans are learning exactly how bad it is..

But, take heart..

Another blow has been dealt to CrapCare...

Yeah, because Congress was creating legislation. The administration was/is planning on circumventing congress on this. Guess why. 'D

The beginning of the end of CrapCare...

http://www.thefoxnation.com/virginia/2010/08/02/federal-judge-questions-congress-power-health-care-debate

I don't recall them waiting until the public accepted HCR. Why would they wait on this? That's all this administration has ever done is ram things through, regardless of public opinion.

Sure, they rammed it thru.. But they took over a year to do it...

Do you think they could have rammed it thru in 2 months?? Highly doubtful, even with a super majority...

That's why I don't think the Undocumented Voter Program will be put into play for the mid-terms..

I honestly and truly thing that, if Obama tried it, there would be a civil war..

Now, I don't think they are above trying to worm it thru for the 2012 elections...

But pushing something like this thru in a couple months for the midterms?? I just can't see them being ALLOWED to do it..

But hay, I have been wrong before... On rare occasions. :D

That's the end of his agenda, if that happens.

I just can't see the Administration moving something as radical as the Undocumented Voter plan into reality so quickly..

We're only midway thru the "rumors and innuendo" stage..

Something as radical as the alleged amnesty program must be gradually fed to the public to be accepted.

If Obama et al tried to do something like this with less than 2 months until the election, the power grab attempt would be so blatantly obvious that I think even CW, David and Liz would say, "WTF"???

Look at CrapCare. No one denies how radical it is. But it had to be gradually introduced to the American Public and even then, it's unlikely to survive..

For Obama to put something like Amnesty For Illegals into play mere months before the elections would be so blatant and disturbing, even the most Liberal Democrat would have to say, "Hmmmmmm Is this right??"...

Of course, the alternative is we're just a couple of conspiracy nuts... :D

I think it will blow up in their faces on Nov. 2nd worse than the ram-through of HCR is about to.

I don't believe that the Administration plans to do this before the mid-terms, if they plan to at all..

Obama has made it clear thru his actions and inactions that he doesn't give a rip about the Democrats in Congress. His, "Yer On Yer Own" attitude has made that abundantly clear..

No, IF this is the plan, then Obama will save it for when it will do HIM the most good..

Say, Spring or Summer of 2012....

I would like to get everyone's reaction on granting blanket amnesty to illegals...

I think it's dead-wrong to reward illegal behavior. I also think Obama and congress are nuts to even be thinking about ramming this through -- circumventing Congress, needless to say, like good little Weathermen-followers -- before the election. I think it will blow up in their faces on Nov. 2nd worse than the ram-through of HCR is about to.

Glad that cake photo worked, too, although it really shouldn't be a birthday cake

We can dedicate it to my puppy. He was four on the Fourth of July. He's a patriot and a RePUPlican. And a hotdog dog.

Chris,

The 'cake photo' was a nice touch!

I can assure you that you'll be up to a nice round number of comments in no time - not including spam, by the way.

And, then ... it will be onwards and upwards to the 100K comment heights. You'll have to keep us posted on the progress at regular intervals! This will be fun.

Of course, you'll have to start planning now for the big 100K party!!! As you know, we all love a party. :)

OK, I had to get that comment off quickly before someone else unknowingly took #10000...

We're actually up to 8,333 valid (non-spam) comments, which is still pretty good (but not a nice, round number).

Glad that cake photo worked, too, although it really shouldn't be a birthday cake (I think I used this image to wish Nancy Pelosi a happy B-day a while back...).

:-)

OK, one more... I just can't resist this one.

This is officially Comment Number Ten Thousand.

No lie! Look at the "Permalink" below if you don't believe me.

Now, admittedly, this includes all spam comments (which are automatically given a number, even if they never appear). But in three years' time (from June, 2007 -- earlier columns appeared on HuffPost and are just archived here), we have reached comment number 10,000.

Woo hoo!

Pat yourselves on the back, everyone. Well done!

To everyone:

OK, I am now ALMOST caught up on the flood of email I had waiting for me after I returned from NRN (I handed out a lot of business cards...), and am going to try to answer as many of the last two weeks' worth of you guys' comments here tonight.

Just to let you folks know I'm not ignoring you... on the contrary, your comments here were the only thing I bothered reading at all (online) while I was at NRN!

Anyway, check in LATE tonight or tomorrow morning for a few belated comments from me. Apologies for the delay.

David,

Democrats stand ready to punish one of their own...

NOW....

What hurts the Democrats is how they allowed Rangel to cheat the American people up to this point..

How Democrats fought tooth and nail and enabled Rangel to escape justice until now..

Democrats have had almost 4 years to reign in Rangel.

THAT is the story that Democrats don't want told.. Especially in light of Pelosi's "Most Ethical Congress in history" claim...

Less then 60 days out from the election, the very public spectacle of the Trial Of Charlie Rangel will play out on TV for all to see..

You simply can't buy that kind of advertising...

Purely from the perspective of defining a narrative, the Charlie Rangel story is an interesting one.

Let's look at a couple of GOP narratives about the Obama administration and Democratic party:

1. The Democratic party is corrupt (Ok, this is a bit of a dated chestnut, but you'll still see conservatives pull this out every now and then)
2. The Obama administration is associated with black radicals (NBP, Ayers, Wright) and is "reverse racist"
3. Democrats are always partisan and won't include Republican ideas

The curious thing about the Charlie Rangel story is that it doesn't seem to fit with any of these GOP narratives.

Instead, it looks more like the Democratic party is more willing to acknowledge corruption irregardless of party. It looks like they are actually standing on a principle.

And, if they're willing to go after fellow Democrats, are they really corrupt? When was the last time anyone saw conservatives go after a conservative?

And, both of these members of Congress are black and yet the administration is still willing to go after them ... this doesn't fit w/ the GOP narrative.

This is why I'm not sure if the Charlie Rangel story actually hurts Democrats with anyone who isn't already predisposed to believe these narratives (i.e. Independents). I just wonder if the Democrats realize this.

What I'm saying is, maybe instead of acting ashamed or embarrassed about this, they should push the story as much as possible from this perspective.

Welcome back, CW!

No further explanation is really necessary why Rangel is also this week's Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week.
