Doesn't exactly sound like full-throated support to me.

But it IS support. That's how these things {{cough}} CrapCare {{cough}} get started..

With the statement, "I want to get a better picture of what our options are." instead of an emphatic Sherman-esque, "VAT?? Hell no!!"...

What Obama's statement says to me is that, once he gets a better picture and said picture indicates that a VAT is the way to go, then a VAT it will be..

Having said all that, I do agree that the headline is misleading.. But not as much as you might think..

And even if it does, it is already dead on arrival over in the Senate.

So was CrapCare at one point or another. :^/

Like I said above, I would not put ANYTHING past this DP Senate..

kind of like "reviving the Fairness Doctrine," which I notice still hasn't happened yet, either, four years in to Pelosi's Speakership.

And perhaps there is a reason for that, eh?? :D Perhaps all the howling from the Hysterical Right made DPs think twice about imposing the Fairness Doctrine. So maybe we're just seeing a replay of that {apparently) successful tactic...

Damn smart, them thar Republicans, eh?? :D {{oooo, gonna burn for that one!! :D}}

Michale -

Oh, Puh-LEEZE. This is a pretty misleading headline. It's trying to give the impression that Obama is somehow supporting the idea, which he is not. Another way to write this headline would be: "Obama admits that the VAT is an idea in some people's brains."

Seriously, this was a standard politician's non-answer, a fancier way of saying "everything's on the table." Here is what Obama actually said:

"I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries. It's something that would be novel for the United States. And before, you know, I start saying 'this makes sense or that makes sense,' I want to get a better picture of what our options are."

Doesn't exactly sound like full-throated support to me. Wake me when Pelosi or Obama actually introduces a bill, because (as I said) it ain't going to happen any time soon. And even if it does, it is already dead on arrival over in the Senate. It's a fantasy, pure and simple -- something for the GOP to cower in the dark and whisper to themselves... kind of like "reviving the Fairness Doctrine," which I notice still hasn't happened yet, either, four years in to Pelosi's Speakership.

Obama suggests value-added tax may be an option

Well, I think my being wrong streak just came to an end.. :D

Ya'all are absolutely right..

Just because one of Obama's main economic advisers says that a VAT is not as bad an idea as it used to be and the Speaker Of The House says that a VAT is "not off the table", how could the Republicans POSSIBLY think that a VAT is being considered!???

As far as their being no support for a VAT???

There was also no support for CrapCare... Until the DPs ram-rodded {{chuckle chuckle}} it thru using a "trick to hide the decline" of support..

Ya'all can pooh-pooh the possibilities all ya want, but we ARE talking about a DP Congress that passed legislation that 75% of Americans opposed..

I would not put ANYTHING past such a DP Congress...

A value added tax is what it says. Only the value added (increase in value) at each stage is taxed. The leather in not taxed over and over.

While I agree that this one is a whopper that is just too big for most voters to fall for today - I worry that come November many will have forgotten the details and just have some idea that voting Democrat will result in higher taxes. So as you said in your Friday Talking Points - the Dems need to be tooting their own horn and making sure that people will hear the message that Democrats have lowered our taxes.
