With the statement, "I want to get a better picture of what our options are." instead of an emphatic Sherman-esque, "VAT?? Hell no!!"...

What Obama's statement says to me is that, once he gets a better picture and said picture indicates that a VAT is the way to go, then a VAT it will be..

Having said all that, I do agree that the headline is misleading.. But not as much as you might think..

And even if it does, it is already dead on arrival over in the Senate.

Oh, Puh-LEEZE. This is a pretty misleading headline. It's trying to give the impression that Obama is somehow supporting the idea, which he is not. Another way to write this headline would be: "Obama admits that the VAT is an idea in some people's brains."

Seriously, this was a standard politician's non-answer, a fancier way of saying "everything's on the table." Here is what Obama actually said:

"I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries. It's something that would be novel for the United States. And before, you know, I start saying 'this makes sense or that makes sense,' I want to get a better picture of what our options are."

Doesn't exactly sound like full-throated support to me. Wake me when Pelosi or Obama actually introduces a bill, because (as I said) it ain't going to happen any time soon. And even if it does, it is already dead on arrival over in the Senate. Just because one of Obama's main economic advisers says that a VAT is not as bad an idea as it used to be and the Speaker Of The House says that a VAT is "not off the table", how could the Republicans POSSIBLY think that a VAT is being considered!???

Ya'all can pooh-pooh the possibilities all ya want, but we ARE talking about a DP Congress that passed legislation that 75% of Americans opposed..
