Actually, the way Pádraig got rid of the snakes was, whenever he visited a village he told the people, "They taste like chicken!"

There's an Irish proverb that should be at the top of every political blog:

Bíonn dhá insint ar scéal, agus dhá leagan déag ar amhrán.

There are two sides to a story, and twelve versions to a song.

Slán 's beannachtaí!

Very entertaining and enlightening. I'd heard most of that one before but 'twas a fun refresher.

Also, here's another related quote. Folks in the know will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure, but I believe this one's also W.C. Fields (according to the brass plaque on the wall of the Catalyst nightclub in Santa Cruz, CA): "Water, never drink it; fish f#@% in it."

Kevin is correct. And she's about to make her second appearance here, this weekend (so tune back in to see it).

Also, HawkOwl, I have kissed the Blarney Stone and have therefore acquired the Irish "gift of gab."

I'm disappointed in you. Usually you're so good about showing attribution. That comment needs to have a credit line at the end which reads:

OK, ya got me on that one.. That is one of my favorite sayings (obviously) but I never bothered to check who actually said it.. :D

Consider me properly chastised. :D

Well, and for sure twas a nice bit o' writing
-- a fine mixture of humor, speculation, deftly turned phrases (and paragraphs), original and imaginative mixing of history, lore, and savvy speculation.
Yeats, Joyce, O'Faolin, and many another Irish writer, especially that blessed, but not yet -- and never likely to be -- sainted, George Bernard Shaw, would be mightily pleased.
"Weigant" does not sound particularly Celtic -- who then, pray tell, is your Irish muse?

So you'll now excuse me if all this typing has raised a monstrous thirst in me.

Everyone needs to believe in something.

I believe I'll have another beer.. :D
