I had read something to the effect that, while the threats get more media time with Obama, the actual count of threats aren't really out of the ordinary.. I just was too lazy to look up the reference... :D

It looks like you may be right, and I may have remembered it faultily. I was reading today about testimony from the head of the Secret Service, and he said threats against Obama are pretty much at the normal levels for any president.

So I withdraw my earlier comment, and apologize for the error.

Actually, threats against Obama have risen like 400% over threats against Bush. There was a story about this around two weeks ago.

OK, I'll concede the point, conditionally.

However, my point was, we should all be concerned about threats against the President, REGARDLESS of who that President is.

I just didn't see much in the way of "outrage" around here when there were threats and verbal attacks on Bush..

Until (again, of course) he or his administration is dragged thru the mud again by the current administration who, ironically enough, is bent on making many of the same decisions and mistakes that Bush and his administration did. Did you check out the article regarding the Sunset of several Patriot Act provisions that Obama is pushing to have re-authorized?? :D

I don't recall any evidence of any "inordinate" number of threats against President Obama.

Let's keep things in perspective here. President Obama is not the second-coming. Despite the milestone of being the first black President, there really isn't any credible evidence to show that he is more or less at risk than any other POTUS.

Oh, I know.. The Hysterical Left likes to be...well hysterical about the threats to "The One".

But these party-crashers were no more a threat to Obama or the Indian President than any other guest there...

Last time I checked, it wasn't against the law to crash a party or to appear unannounced at the White House. If it were, imagine how many tourists have broken the law?? :D

Matt is right...we can always count on a comprehensive historical perspective from you - that goes without saying. What seems to be missing here, though, is a little present-day context, insofar as the security implications of this little incident are concerned.

And, I'm surprised to read that since these two sad examples of human beings passed through the magnetometer with flying colours they posed no danger to anyone! Do we really seriously believe that? Do people have to be carrying metal to be a serious threat to life and limb?

I guess I'm just saying that in an environment where President Obama's assassination is being fantasized about in certain segments of the media/blogosphere/punditocracy and where the Secret Service receives an inordinate number of threats against him, and taking into account the fact that this was a state dinner in honour of India, a state not at all immune from the threat of terrorism...I could go on...that we should be making light of a security breach like this is incomprehensible to me.

Oh, it could have been a lot worse, alright. And, maybe it will be next time.
