And Michale: Thanks again for telling me how to do this... I really, really, appreciate that lesson for a dunce.

Sorry Michale.

I appreciate your restraint on this post, but you're still filling up most of the comments in more recent posts. Try harder. Your barrage of comments make it hard for someone to respond point-for-point because it would take more effort than most humans would willingly put in. To paraphrase a paraphrase from one of my favorite writers, Russell Baker, life is too short; and Proust(Michale) is too long....So you're in good company, whatever the heck I'm trying to say. :)

No joke or sarcasm here (I know, I know... What's the catch?? Ya'all ask...:D)

But there was a line drawn in the sand. A big bright one that Obama stated several times.

He will veto any plan that adds to the deficit...

Can't get much brighter than that, eh??

Thanks for breaking down Obama's speech. It looks like:

- Lots of good framing
- But still too long
- And no line in the sand

Fingers still crossed that a bill will pass which doesn't just benefit corporate health care.

On another note.

Media bias is a common and resurgent theme amongst these pages..

With the Van Jones debacle mentioned previously and the current ACORN mess that is sure to get worse how can ANYONE, in their right mind, deny that there is not a complete and utter Left slant amongst the majority of the media outlets?

The proof is there and is ever growing exponentially....

MSM, with a few notable exceptions, is totally in the bag for Obama, the Democrats and the Left in general.

michale: pelosi's reversal of course was not a coincidence, it was bought and paid for. whether or not you're right and that really is the end for public health insurance, only time will tell. my quatloos are already down.

Well, it seems that the Wed Speech bump has run it's course.. The "Public Option" is all but dead and buried. Even it's most ardent supporter, Nancy 'We-Will-Not-Pass-A-Bill-Without-The-Public-Option' Pelosi is signaling that the PO is not vital. I wonder if she hurt herself with that 180-degree spin.

The statements coming from the Left has caused me to restore my prediction back to 60-40 odds that DunselCare will fail and not even make it out of Congress.

Considering the imminent failure of DunselCare and the ACORN troubles that just will not go away, I can't help but hear, when I think of Democrats' chances in the 2010 mid-terms, Simon & Garfunkel's SLIP SLIDING AWAY...

WOW!

8 Comments in less than 12 hours after posting and not ONE of them was mine!! :D

Take THAT, kevinem2!!!! :D J/K :D

CW,

<I>But I have to caution you, while I was pleased to see Joe Wilson become a lightning rod for all that is wrong with the lack of decorum in politics today, I have to say that both sides have a point in the whole argument.</I>

This is exactly why I like it here. Because by and large, ya call a spade a spade. :D

Yer also dead on ballz accurate when you liken the partisanship to religion. This is the problem that the partisans (AKA zealots) on BOTH sides of the aisle have.

<I>So we get howling from the Left over decorum in the chamber — conveniently ignoring some not-quite-as-bad Democratic behavior in the past, during George W. Bush speeches. We also get howling from the Left over the "lie" charge.

But the howling from the Right has a point, too. Because any Democrat condemning Wilson today for calling Obama a liar should stop and think about the fact that Obama himself was calling a lot of Republicans (not by name, but by blatant inference) liars as well, during the same speech. He did so a number of times, actually. Instead of the forceful and active-voice "You lie!" however, Obama used a more passive phraseology: "It is a lie, plain and simple."</I>

Getting all hysterical and bent out of shape when a politician lies is like getting all hysterical and bent out of shape because water is wet and ice is cold.

It's the nature of the beast. :D

<I>But enough of all this Republican love! </I>

See my first point above. :D

Elizabeth -

I was kind of perplexed when Obama started off on the economy, but he pivoted pretty quickly to his main topic, so I considered it kind of a preamble.

nypoet22 -

I just have to say, Tedicare works on so many levels. Plus, it's fun to say no matter how you pronounce it!

Tedicare... Teddycare...

Well done!

:-)

Yeah right -

You make a good point. The media was declaring the public option dead, cold, and in the coffin waiting for burial. Obama forced them back from this edge, at least for now.

I think Obama should tell any Republican "OK, I'll consider your idea. But I'm not going to use it unless you pledge to vote for the bill if I do. If you can't even vote for your own ideas, then we are not going to use them." But maybe that's just me, I dunno...

There were no points missing in the President speech. If he would have completely said no to the public option then the Republican's would have by no doubt defeated the bill. While in the short term the public option wll cost some money -- in the long term in would probably pay for itself. It is sad when a political party would rather see people sick and dying than see President Obama or the Democrats score a victory. Let me rephrase this it is sad when a political party would rather see people sick and dying than see the people score a victor. He painted a bill that everyone could like from adding a swap system that John McCain could endorse; leaving enough room to say no to a public option now but yes to one if the Health Care deficit is not significantly lowered in the next four years; to putting in place enforcement rules that even Joe Wilson could endorse.

One point that I felt the President needs to keep pushing is when he said Health Care is our deficit problem. Ms Miller is correct that it will continue to be but at least in 25 years we will not be broke. Moreover, with some of the ideas such as making preventative screenings acessable would cost more in the short term, in the long time science would have better, cheaper, and more reliable ways of testing. This type of mass research could fuel the Health Care industry in research and design like nothing has since AIDS.

Talk about masterful speeches...and blogs!

President Obama's speech was indeed masterful, insofar as it did exactly what the President wanted it to do, presumably...leave the critics shell-shocked. You could see that clearly on the faces of those in the seats on one side of the room, in particular. It really gave obfuscation whole new meaning.

But, Dr. Weil said the speech missed the point.

I think he meant that while reforming healthcare insurance and extending coverage and improving access is necessary, it is nowhere near being sufficient to prevent the spiraling out of control of healthcare costs or to improve the nation’s overall health.

Take prevention, for example. President Obama mentioned - essentially, as no more than an afterthought - colonoscopies and mammograms, the very least of our concerns when it comes to what we need to be doing from a disease prevention perspective.

One of my favourite lines was 'our healthcare problem is our deficit problem'. But, if everything mentioned in this speech is implemented, the healthcare problem will still be the deficit problem.

And, one more bone of contention with this speech, if I may...which has absolutely nothing to do with healthcare, per se. (Hey, that rhymes!...sorry)

I was more than a bit miffed when President Obama began his speech by talking about the economy and the financial crisis and the real progress that his administration has made on that score. He went on to thank everyone and their brother...everyone, that is, except the Secretary of the Treasury - and the Fed chairman, for that matter - who has been working tirelessly to move the financial system away from the brink of collapse and to prevent a similar situation from ever developing again.

Regardless of the lack of public appreciation for his efforts, Secretary Geithner will keep on keeping on, working on behalf of families and businesses, most of whom - like the president - are reticent to show any acknowledgment for a job well done. But, that's OK...the praise always comes in another lifetime, anyway.
