The media as a reliable news source has gone the way of the dinosaur. And I can pinpoint exactly when this process started.

It started when news became entertainment from when the standards for news became ratings rather than competence.

When a news broadcast (ANY news broadcast) is judged, not by the merits of it's reporting, but rather by it's ratings, the viewing public is always the loser.

ABC's Healthcare infomercial is a perfect example..

OBAMA = ratings

And if journalistic integrity (now THERE's an oxymoron) has to not only take a hit but be killed and buried, oh well..

I can't disagree, but I would note that the "cartoons" arrived when animation outfits began doing accident reconstruction for lawsuits. As computer power made the price of animation go down it became possible for everyone and his brother to get in on the act. The prevalence of animated reconstructions on TV news has everything in common with CNN's "holograms" and that ridiculous touchscreen they use these days: they're showing off their technology.

Another thing to note: the US is alone among advanced industrial societies for censoring violence this way and replacing it with cartoons. The Neda video is playing uncensored across Europe and Asia as we speak.
