I was happy to hear and read this morning that President Obama is on the offensive about getting the stimulus bill passed. I think that he has an understanding of how Congress works and has a playbook that will bring him victory.

Still have to say I'm impressed by the start of the Obama administration. I think it's just a bit of a shock to realize what it is we're up against - many of the largest corporations in America, the media they own, and the very philosophy of "free trade" which has taken root in this country.

Even Clinton, a very popular Democrat, advanced the "free trade" agenda.

Republicans are digging in as they see the larger fight as over which agenda controls the country.

Obama actually has a very good message and I was glad to see him take to the bully pulpit.

He makes a good case for immediacy and counters Republican arguments.

Where I think people are having trouble is understanding how investing in America will help the economy. He needs to draw the link.

Republicans do it by saying if you give the money to the private sector, they will create wealth. Simple. To the point. Everyone understands.

So he needs to say something along the lines of "In bad times, we have people who have been laid off, sitting idle. Now we could either pay them unemployment to do nothing, or we could pay them and get something from it. It is an investment in our future."

Then give an example of one of the great projects built during the Depression and show the tremendous return on investment.

But make no mistake, this will be a challenge. Especially, since we're still fighting uphill against conservatives who have been working to win the hearts and minds of the public for 30 years.

Actually, after Obama's counteroffensive got rolling tonight I had a vision of the future: Obama stops playing nice with the GOP, rams his agenda through Congress, gets an even bigger Democratic majority in 2010, and then destroys Sarah Palin in 2012.

The Republicans are making themselves irrelevant. When we're on the other side of this, the GOP will be a diminished political force.
